What I Actually Noticed After Using a Free Post-Quantum VPN

I've used VPNs mainly for practical reasons. When I'm working from a public Wi-Fi network, browsing from a place where I don't completely trust the network, or simply want another layer between my device and the internet, a VPN is useful. I don't really need a VPN to sound impressive. I want it to connect reliably, have sensible security features, and not make everyday browsing unnecessarily complicated. Recently, I've been using the free version of OllaVPN. What initially made me curious about it wasn't the usual "fastest VPN" or "thousands of servers" type of claim. It was the fact that it focuses on post-quantum cryptography (PQC). That sounded more like something from a cybersecurity research paper than something I would actually use for ordinary browsing. After using it for a while, I realized that the interesting part is actually how normal the experience feels. My first impression When I first hear terms like post-quantum cryptography, I tend to expect complicated settings and technical configuration. I don't want to spend half an hour figuring out encryption options before I can open a browser. That wasn't really the experience. I can use the VPN without needing to understand the cryptography happening underneath the connection. I connect to a location and continue with whatever I was doing online. The complicated part is handled by the technology rather than being pushed onto the user. For me, that's important. Security software shouldn't require every ordinary user to understand cryptographic protocols. Why I became interested in PQC Post-quantum cryptography is probably the most unusual part of OllaVPN compared with the free VPNs I've used before. The basic idea behind PQC is preparing cryptographic systems for a future where sufficiently powerful quantum computers could threaten some of the public-key cryptography we rely on today. That doesn't mean today's internet encryption is suddenly useless. Practical cryptographically relevant quantum computers capable of breaking modern systems at scale don't currently exist. The concern is about preparing before that becomes a real problem. There's also a concept called "harvest now, decrypt later." In simple terms, an attacker could potentially collect encrypted information today and keep it until future technology makes decryption more practical. That is one reason post-quantum migration is being discussed now rather than waiting until quantum computers become powerful enough to create an immediate crisis. OllaVPN's technical information says its VPN connections use a hybrid post-quantum key exchange, combining classical cryptography with ML-KEM-768. ML-KEM is part of the post-quantum standards finalized by NIST. For someone like me, the interesting thing isn't memorizing the algorithm name. It's seeing a technology that I previously associated with future cybersecurity discussions being incorporated into an everyday VPN. Using the free version I'm specifically using the free version, so there are some limitations that are worth mentioning. The current free plan provides one device and has a 10 Mbps speed limit. It also includes features such as the PQC handshake, kill switch, in-tunnel DNS and peer isolation. For my own usage, the speed limit hasn't been a major problem because I mainly use the VPN for regular browsing. I'm not constantly downloading massive files or trying to run several devices through the same VPN connection. If someone needs a VPN for heavy streaming, large downloads, gaming, or multiple devices, they should obviously look at those requirements before deciding whether a free plan is sufficient. For ordinary browsing, though, being able to use the free version is useful because I can actually test the service rather than making a decision based entirely on advertisements or reviews. The features I actually care about One feature I always look for in a VPN is a kill switch. A VPN connection can occasionally drop. If that happens, I don't want my computer to immediately continue using the normal internet connection without me realizing it. A kill switch is designed to block traffic when the VPN connection isn't available. It's not the kind of feature that I think about while everything is working normally, but it's one of those features that becomes important precisely when something goes wrong. DNS protection is another detail that I think gets overlooked. Whenever I enter a website address, my device needs to resolve that domain to an IP address. If DNS requests are handled outside the VPN tunnel, there can be a privacy issue even though the rest of the traffic is going through the VPN. OllaVPN says it routes DNS through a resolver inside the VPN tunnel and blocks the operating system's normal DNS path while the tunnel is active. I like that these things happen in the background. I don't want to constantly monitor whether DNS is leaking while I'm trying to work. A VPN doesn't make me completely anonymous This is something I think is important to say whenever discussing VPNs. A VPN is not the same thing as complete anonymity. If I sign into my Google account, social media account, email, or another service, that service can still associate my activity with my account. A VPN doesn't stop websites from recognizing me through cookies, browser fingerprinting, or information I voluntarily provide. It also doesn't protect me from every type of online threat. If I download malware, use a weak password, fall for a phishing message, or install a malicious browser extension, having a VPN doesn't magically solve those problems. I still need to use strong passwords, two-factor authentication, updated software, and basic common sense when browsing. For me, the best way to think about a VPN is as one layer of privacy and network security, not a complete security system. What I found interesting about OllaVPN The biggest thing I took away from using OllaVPN wasn't actually the VPN connection itself. It was the fact that post-quantum cryptography suddenly felt much less abstract. Before using it, PQC was something I mostly encountered when reading about cybersecurity, encryption standards and future computing. Now I've experienced it as part of a normal consumer application. That's an interesting shift. Security technology often works this way. Something starts as a complicated technical concept, gets standardized and tested, and eventually becomes something ordinary users don't have to think about. The same thing happened with many technologies we now take for granted. OllaVPN is interesting to me because its approach is built around using hybrid post-quantum protection rather than waiting for quantum computing to become an immediate problem. Its own technical documentation describes PQC as being enabled on every connection rather than being hidden behind an advanced setting. What I would tell someone thinking about trying it If you're considering trying a free PQC VPN, I'd say start with your actual requirements. Don't choose a VPN just because the words "quantum-safe" sound impressive. Ask yourself what you're going to use it for. Do you mainly browse websites? Work from public Wi-Fi? Check email? Need privacy on unfamiliar networks? If so, a free plan may be perfectly reasonable to test. If you need high bandwidth, several devices, gaming performance, or large downloads, then the limitations of a free plan become more important. For me, the free version has been enough for the way I normally use a VPN. I also like being able to experiment with post-quantum technology without having to turn the whole experience into a technical project. My overall takeaway After using the free version, I don't think the main reason to look at OllaVPN is simply "I need another VPN." There are plenty of VPN services available. What makes it different enough for me to pay attention is the focus on post-quantum security and the attempt to make that technology part of a normal VPN experience. I'm not claiming that a PQC VPN makes someone invincible online, and I wouldn't make that claim about any VPN. Online privacy involves many different layers, and users still have to make sensible security decisions. But I do think preparing for future cryptographic threats is an interesting direction for internet security. Being able to try that approach through a free VPN makes the idea much easier to understand from a normal user's perspective. For now, I'll keep using the free version for my everyday browsing. It's not because I expect a quantum computer to break my connection tomorrow. It's simply because I find it interesting to see where internet security is heading—and I'd rather learn about new security technology by actually using it than just reading technical explanations about it.
